December Fishing

My last time out was on my home river, the Eagle, and winter fishing is officially here. There’s ice above Gypsum (in some areas) on the banks and it’s slowly expanding, but as the weather fluctuates so will the ice, so be careful out there. Other areas are already completely iced over, but those spots have a hill to the south and get limited sunlight each day. When I found open water however, I also found fish willing to eat my flies. I used some larger zebra midges (size 16 and 18) as well as some black RS II’s once I saw some midges on the water and in the snow. Always check the snow to see the color and size of midges during the winter because the difference between an 18 and 24 is significant. Tight lines!
