You are one of one. Just like each unique snowflake that has ever taken flight, you are you and you are special, so don’t forget it.

The holiday season presents many joys, challenges, special moments and yes, presents. Families come together from afar or just down the street to celebrate much more than just togetherness.

As a teacher, there’s always a sense of closure as January approaches. My students have hopefully reached a goal or milestone during fall term, but the New Year beckons and it’s a big one, 2025. Have I really been alive for a quarter of a new century?  Time certainly does pass in the blink of an eye and sometimes I forget that…

I recently had my students tell me I was actually funny, but I think they were just being nice. Are you the kind one, the polite one, or the friendly agitator in your clan? Either way, you’re one of one.

Over the years I’ve learned that people really don’t change all that much unless a seismic life shift occurs. We are who we are and that’s OK. This Christmas, my family knows I’m going to bring up fly fishing and I know they’re going to roll their eyes and that’s OK too.  I am most certainly one of one and everyone I know is fully aware of that fact.

So, if your family gets under your skin after spending 45 seconds with them in the coming days, don’t forget that they probably just can’t help it. They’re one of one and so are you so tell that joke, show your unique qualities, or just relax. I still can’t understand why my family doesn’t love hearing me talk about the epic mayfly hatches I encountered this year, so maybe they’re the crazy ones. 😉

I sincerely hope this Christmas is joyful, calm and peaceful for all of you, but just in case it’s not, realize you’re not alone.

I’m looking forward to doing nothing for a few days after flying to VA with my folks to see my brother and his family, aside from going to Treehouse Brewery before the rest of my time off is spent on the river and in the snow.

Happy Holidays!
