During the Prohibition era, the concept of drinking before dinner evolved, with people hosting “cocktail hours” or “happy hours” at speakeasies before eating at restaurants where alcohol could not be served. What a novel idea!

Since then, happy hour has evolved and discounted food/drinks can be enjoyed (and served) at bars and restaurants without the threat of a buzz ruining raid.

A welcomed happy hour can cure a bad day at the office or a rough day educating the young minds of America. It can be a place to catch up with a friend you haven’t seen in far too long or a time to just sit in the sun and enjoy a deserved beverage of your choosing.

Either way, they’re fun, and depending on your line of work; almost necessary. Before the Roosevelt Hotel closed in New York City, my brother and his wife (who were both corporate lawyers at the time) would meet for happy hour, sip above average sized martinis, and snack on the bar mix, which would change on a weekly basis. There is something to be said about a high quality, classic bar mix…

Whatever is ailing you, a happy hour can help and if you don’t drink, perhaps an hour walk after work or taking the kids to the playground will suffice. Better yet, enjoy happy hour on the river and watch the sunlight fade behind the hills… Regardless of your preference, it’s spring in some parts of the world and that is a very, very good thing.

Invite someone to your version of “happy hour” this week. They may need one even more than you do.

My happy hour last Friday
