Kesha said it best when she still had a $ in her name; We R Who We R.
I’ve been watching a show on Apple TV called “Your Friends and Neighbors” and there was a recent line that instantly reminded me of that song.
“People can’t help the way they are.”
Ain’t that the truth.
I was also talking (and fishing) with a former student and he said for the longest time he wasn’t sure who he was or how to act, so naturally he just tried to be like everyone else. Sometimes it’s hard to find out who we really are if we’re trying to be something (or someone) we’re not.
We all have a side to us other people may not care for, but you get what you get. We’re all unapologetically ourselves at least some of the time even when others may just want the watered down, passive, easy to deal with version.
Being honest in the moment may seem unwise, but sometimes we just can’t help it. Life is just too short to pretend to be something we’re not so don’t; beeee yourself. Any Aladdin fans out there?
I fish how I like to fish. I cook how I like to cook. I jam out to the music I love and I still make epic mix CD’s. I know, I’m old.
I just sincerely believe that change is really hard the older we get, but I also believe admitting we’re wrong sometimes humanizes us and even Kesha would be proud. I mean, she did eventually take the $ sign out of her name, so if celebs can change (even a little bit)—we can too.
I’m not sure where May has gone, but summer is rapidly approaching! Enjoy the outdoor picnics, games, time on (or in) the water, family, friends, or whatever you else you enjoy this time of year.
Maybe we’re just all eerily similar to who we were when we turned 6 years old (definitely not talking about myself here), but perhaps that’s the best thing. It’s easy to get old and jaded, but Chris Cornell (when he was in Audioslave) said being yourself “is all that you can do.” I’m gonna roll with that.
Happy May and don’t forget to look up.
