Gone are the summer evenings of sunlight and splendor. Fallen are the leaves of autumn once more. Bright mornings give way to early darkness as a new season approaches.

The rivers are much cooler now and the snow will be flying soon. I even had ice in my guides while fishing this weekend, which acted as a reminder that winter is on the horizon.

Many anglers have already pulled out their fly tying gear in preparation for their favorite hatches in 2026. I’ll be out there in the cold when I need to fish, but I enjoy being inside when the days are shorter and temperatures rarely rise above 40.

New recipes at my tying vise and in the kitchen are already being concocted. Unread books stare at me in the hopes I’ll oblige them someday soon. Future plans and trips for next year are already rolling around in my head. These next few months are not only a time for reflection, but preparation.

It’s hard to reluctantly wave goodbye to fall, but it will return again next year and I’ll welcome another season of change. I hope a snowy winter is upon us because it’s hard to beat an epic powder day.
Winter fishing brings its own joys and challenges because nature loves to hide. Thanksgiving will be here soon and I hope you remember to slow down, give thanks, and enjoy the season of life you’re in as well. Those seem to keep flying by and coming back around at a rapidly increasing rate. Stay warm and don’t forget to look up.
