I’m not sure when the term side quest was coined, but it tracks. My students use the phrase all the time and I finally understand why. Summertime is about taking the road less traveled, going on tangents and reveling in the unknown. All while eventually arriving back in exactly the same place, home. And, a random side quest on a side street or side channel just can’t be a bad thing.

A few years back my buddy Darren and I traveled to Iceland and Spain. We found the most amazing food, libations and people on every side street we ventured down. I feel as if the most popular places are always on the main drag, but the best destinations require slightly more effort.
During normal water years (unlike this one), fishing side channels seem to lead to something special. Smart fish understand where they won’t be as disturbed, and that’s most likely in a side channel. Birds and other animals also know refuge oftentimes lies away from the main current.

I just got back from Montana and Google Maps decided I needed a side quest down a dirt road before the interstate, and a return to normalcy, beckoned.
I honestly laughed because this route was in no way faster as my phone had instructed, but it was a lot more fun. Only deer and free ranging bovine graced my bumpy journey, which gave me a sense of peace knowing school is just around the corner.

Some back roads are just like welcoming side channels, and I’m grateful for that. I know summer isn’t over although I am seeing plenty of folks ready for fall and cooler weather. No matter where you venture in the coming weeks, take a little side quest if time allows. Who knows what you’ll find?
